Could reincarnation/channeling and possession be the same thing?

I don't believe people have "souls", they are "souls" and they are NOT spirits. Souls do not possess spirits, spirits possess souls. The Spirit of life forms what a soul is and is the breath of it, which means without it, the soul "dies" (remains dormant or "asleep"). The memory is still available in the Spirit, which is why people can access it and claim to recall other lives.
